| When Oklahoma Foundation Seed Stocks, Inc. takes control of the
Breeder seed of a new variety, it also assumes the responsibility for maintaining a source
of pure seed as long as there is a reasonable demand for that variety. Extreme care
is taken to see that the productivity of the variety is not reduced by genetic mixing in a
growers field or by mechanical mixture of seed at planting, harvesting, or conditioning of
the seed stocks. The fields used in the production of Foundation Seed
are relatively small, and therefore can be thoroughly rogued each year to remove off-type
plants. Roguing is often done under the supervision of the Plant Breeder who
developed the variety and knows the characteristics better than anyone else. |
